Changes in 1.0.0

Breaking changes

This release introduces breaking changes by discontinuing support for the sp object in favor of sf. Although the sp object is still available on CRAN, it is no longer being actively developed (https://geocompx.org/post/2023/rgdal-retirement/). This is the main reason that prompted the decision to transition to sf.

Here is the list of affected objects that are now returned as Spatial Feature (sf):

Installs the current CRAN release. Prebuilt binaries on Windows and macOS.

Development version from ropensci/rnaturalearthdata. Installs pak first if it is not already available.

Fast Ubuntu binaries via r2u (no compilation). The cranapt setup runs once and is skipped when it is already enabled. We list this channel from recorded r2u download activity rather than from a live index of the repository, so treat it as last known rather than guaranteed.

bspm (used by r2u) also needs make: sudo apt install make
