Automatic generation of maximally distinct qualitative color palettes, optionally tailored to color deficiency. A set of colors or a subspace of a color space is used as input and a final palette of specified size is generated by picking colors that maximize the minimum pairwise difference among the chosen colors. Adaptations to color vision deficiency, background colors, and white points are supported.

New Features

qualpal() gains refinement_starts to control experimental continuous refinement for HSL and LCHab regions with the CIEDE2000 metric. The default uses five starts, which can change palettes and increase runtime. Set it to zero to disable refinement. Other metrics and fixed input sets skip refinement.
HSL regions now use the updated C++ library's LCH-based candidate sampler. Disabling refinement does not restore palettes from earlier library versions.

Refactoring

The package now uses cpp11 instead of Rcpp to bind the C++ code to R. This should speed up compilation times and reduce dependencies.

Fast Ubuntu binaries via r2u (no compilation). The cranapt setup runs once and is skipped when it is already enabled. We list this channel from recorded r2u download activity rather than from a live index of the repository, so treat it as last known rather than guaranteed.
