A wrapper for the U.S. Census Bureau APIs that returns data frames of Census data and metadata. Available datasets include the Decennial Census, American Community Survey, Small Area Health Insurance Estimates, Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, Population Estimates and Projections, and more.

Changes in 0.10.0

As of May 12, 2026, the Census Bureau APIs require the use of an API key for retrieving data and metadata.

listCensusApis() and listCensusMetadata() now use the API key argument.
Documentation and error messages are updated to reflect that using an API key is now required.

Installs the current CRAN release. Prebuilt binaries on Windows and macOS.

Fast Ubuntu binaries via r2u (no compilation). The cranapt setup runs once and is skipped when it is already enabled. We list this channel from recorded r2u download activity rather than from a live index of the repository, so treat it as last known rather than guaranteed.

bspm (used by r2u) also needs make: sudo apt install make
